LEICESTER RIDERS ADD BRITISH FORWARD CALLUM LAWSON

Leicester Riders are delighted to announce the signing of experienced British forward and former Great Britain international Callum Lawson.

Coventry born Lawson returns to British basketball for the first time in his professional career, bringing a wealth of experience gained across Europe, including extensive spells in Iceland, Germany and Sweden.

The 30-year-old joins the Riders following a productive season with Valur in Iceland’s top division, where he averaged 14.6 points and 5.1 rebounds across 32 appearances.

The 6’6” forward previously represented Valur between 2021 and 2023, playing a key role in the club’s historic 2022 playoff triumph. Lawson helped Valur claim the championship with a decisive Game 5 victory over Tindastóll, featuring against current London Lions forward Deane Williams.

Having spent a significant period training with the Riders during pre-season while a free agent, Lawson is already familiar with the team, coaching staff and style of play as he prepares to make his return to British basketball.

Speaking after completing his move to Leicester, Lawson said:

“I’m really excited to get started with the Riders. Being from the Midlands, it’s a great opportunity to play close to home and be part of a club with such a strong history.

“I’ve really enjoyed being around the guys already, and I’m looking forward to getting started and playing my part in helping us have a successful season.”

Riders head coach Rob Paternostro welcomed Lawson’s addition to the roster and highlighted the versatility and experience he brings to the team.

“We’re really excited to have Callum with us. He’s been practising with the group for a while now, so he already understands how we want to play.

“He’s a versatile two-way player who can play multiple positions and gives us a lot of flexibility on both ends of the floor.

“Callum is an experienced player who has been part of winning teams, and that experience and veteran presence will be really valuable for us. He brings a competitive edge, toughness and a team-first mentality, and we’re looking forward to having him as part of the Riders.”

Club officials have been working to get Callum registered in time to allow him to make his Riders debut in tonight’s season opener against the Bristol Flyers. Get tickets here.

Additionally, Canadian-British forward Trent Johnson is set to be on the sidelines for the foreseeable future after suffering an injury in practice. Club medical staff are working with Trent, and hope to see him back on court soon. Everyone at the Leicester Riders wishes Trent a speedy recovery.
