Leicester Riders are today announcing that club captain and Riders legend Conner Washington will be stepping away from the Riders court after an incredible playing career with the club. Washington, one of the most decorated players in Riders history, leaves an unrivalled legacy of leadership, determination, and commitment to the game.
As part of this transition, the Riders are proud to confirm that Conner will continue to play a vital role in the organisation through the Leicester Riders Foundation, where he has already made a huge impact as an ambassador for the Junior National League basketball programme last year.
In his new position with the Foundation, Conner will take on leadership of the LRF Satellite Club initiative, a key community programme aimed at creating accessible basketball opportunities for young people across Leicester and Leicestershire. The initiative will see the establishment of new community hubs where young people can get an introduction to structured basketball, develop their basketball skills, and engage with the sport in a positive and supportive environment whilst competing in a Central Venue League at the Mattioli Arena.

Speaking on the transition, Conner said:
“I will forever be grateful for my time player for the Riders – basketball has been such a blessing and will always be that way for me. I hope that when people think of basketball in the city of Leicester, the name Washington continues to inspire.”
Riders Head Coach Rob Paternostro also paid tribute to Conner’s career, saying:
“Conner Washington will go down in history as one of the winningest players in top-flight British basketball. He joined us as a young player and, from day one, made the very most of his opportunities both on and off the floor. During his time with us, he proudly represented his country, earned his degree at Loughborough University, and grew into one of the most reliable competitors in the game.
As a coach, it was always comforting to know that in the biggest moments, Conner would rise to the occasion. He was not only an excellent teammate but also someone whose unwavering focus was always on winning. His impact on this club, and on British basketball, will be remembered for years to come.”
Washington’s passion for inspiring the next generation has long been evident through his community involvement, and this new role ensures that his influence will continue to be felt by countless young players in the region.
The Leicester Riders wish to thank Conner for his immense contribution to the club on the court, and look forward to supporting him as he embarks on this exciting new chapter in building the future of basketball in the community.
