Spencer Johnson Re-Signs with Leicester Riders for 2025–26 SLB Season

The Leicester Riders are delighted to announce that Spencer Johnson will return for the 2025–26 Super League Basketball (SLB) season.

The 6’4” wing joined the Riders ahead of the 2024–25 campaign from Brigham Young University (BYU), following an impressive collegiate career. During his time at BYU, Johnson was named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team and earned an All-Big 12 Honourable Mention in 2024. Additionally, he received an All-WCC Honourable Mention in 2023.

In his debut season with the Riders, Johnson became a regular in Rob Paternostro’s starting line-up, averaging 10.2 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game. His consistent performances earned him the Coach’s Player of the Year award at the club’s end-of-season ceremony.

On the court, Johnson played a key role in Leicester’s successful SLB Playoff Final victory at the O2 Arena in May 2025, helping the team secure the Playoff title against long-standing rivals Newcastle Eagles.

Head Coach Rob Paternostro commented on Johnson’s return:

“We’re really excited to have Spencer back with us. He was a valued member of our team, both on and off the court.

Spencer is an all-round player — he can shoot, pass, and rebound at a high level. He brings versatility and toughness to our backcourt every single day.

He’s a competitor. Spencer comes ready to play every time he steps on the floor. He plays to win and gives you everything he has on both ends of the court. His impact in the play-offs last season was massive — he never backed down from a big moment or a big play.

He has good size for a guard and embraces every challenge. Whether it’s scoring, facilitating, or taking on tough defensive match-ups, Spencer is locked in. He’s a key piece of our team, and we’re thrilled to have him back in Riders colours.”

Johnson also shared his excitement:

“I’m beyond excited to be returning to the Leicester Riders for my second season.

This club, the fans, and this city truly feel like home now for my family and me. After winning the trophy last season, I’m ready to build on what we started and chase something even more special together. Let’s go Riders!”

Alongside playing for the Riders in the SLB, Johnson will be studying for his master’s degree at Loughborough University and competing for the team in the BUCS competition. The club would like to thank Loughborough University for our continued partnership.
